Unfortunately, I cannot confirm this, since I no longer have the
computer that had this problem. The hal-disable-polling --device
/dev/cdrom command might help to prove if it's the same problem though.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

I have solved this problem (sort of) by running sudo hal-disable-polling
--device /dev/cdrom, which I have aliased to cdoff.
When I want to use the cd drive again, I run cdon, which is aliased to
sudo hal-disable-polling --enable --device /dev/cdrom
My current kernel is:

could test the new release and verify if this is still an issue -

Of course. Didn't know the protocol, so didn't want to swamp you with
unneeded information. It's a bit embarassing all the places I've talked
about this, but in order of relevant responses:

Thanks for your bug report. Could you please add the output of 'lspci
-vvn' to the bug?

I would like nothing more than to give you that information. I have been
trying everywhere to fix this bug, including installing custom kernels
(v2.6.19) to no avail.
If you'd like a list of the places that I've posted this or variations
of it, let me know.
In the mean time:
lspci -vvn

Are more details needed for this bug? If so, please let me know. I'm not
sure what's needed for debugging on this, but I notice that nobody seems
to have looked at it...
