Thanks. I suspect this is due to a small /dev/hda8 partition. You'll
need at least 2.5 GB to install Ubuntu, and 3GB would probably be a
safer bet.

thank you for your answer. In the meanwhile I tried to install Ubuntu once
more. But before I really cleaned up my partitions (with gPartEd). So I had one
10GB-Partition ready for Ubuntu. But then there comes a dialog where the
Installer suggests to install Ubuntu on this partition. Very well. B
