This means /lib/plymouth/themes/default.plymouth is not a link. What is
it, and where did it come from?

I pasted an english version of the error I got without noticing is a bit
different from mine in italian...
$ sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth

Ok. Did you create /lib/plymouth/themes/default.grub by hand? The
contents match the default. If you rm
/lib/plymouth/themes/default.grub, does update-alternatives complete
successfully?
Since I don't see any way that this file would have been created by the
plymouth package, I don't think
Yes, I tweaked grub default colors some months ago so I've probably messed up
this file (instead of working on linked file!).
Removed it manually and update-alternatives completed succesfully.
You're right is not a plymouth bug, it was me not remembering what I've done!
