Public bug reported:

The next version of ubuntu will switch to gnome3.

According to synaptic backintime-gnome seems to be using pygtk. And according
to http://blog.rabbitvcs.org/archives/293 pygtk will never be ported to gnome3.
He normally is very well-informed as he is the maintainer of nautilus-python
and rabbitvcs.
http://www.pygtk.org/ does approve that pygtk will no more be actively develop
but does not tell about it being not supported at all in gnome3: "Existing
authors of PyGTK applications are also recommended to port their applications
to PyGObject to take advantage of new features appearing in GTK-3 and beyond."
so I don't know if porting is immediately necessary or if it will be in the far
future.

Seems like the successor of pygtk is http://live.gnome.org/PyGObject.
The good news is that according to
http://live.gnome.org/PyGObject/IntrospectionPorting (you have to scroll
down a bit about to find any valid information on porting) porting seems
to be doable, at least.
