Two things that I have changed:
1) disabled optional modules in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
# Cause optional modules to be loaded above generic modules
# install snd /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd $CMDLINE_OPTS {
/sbin/modprobe --quiet --use-blacklist snd-ioctl32 ; /sbin/modprobe
Thank you, I upgraded the drivers, but it didn't help, everything stayed
the same (e.g., speakers work, microphone works, but headphones do not
work).

I have played for some time with different outputs and also alsamixer,
but that didn't help. Checked that the main user is in the audio group
(that was the problem, that was fixed in the previous version, 10.10).

Thanks for your bug report. Did you have working sound in the version of
Ubuntu you upgraded from, i.e 10.10? Have you checked that you have the
correct output selected in the volume control preferences under the
output tab?
