I have this problem too.Applications close and Alt+f2 and only work
Unity 2D don't 3D.This is in live-pendrive Alpha 1.

ALT-F2 to run a command doesn't work, either. The 'run a command' window
appears briefly but then vanishes. This is in a fresh install of the
official alpha1 (which makes alpha1 a bit unfriendly for testing
VirtualBox, since ubuntu doesn't provide 3d out of the box in VB).

I wondered if this might actually be a metacity problem but it doesn't
appear so. The app menu opens OK in classic w/o effects so it does seem
to be limited to the Ubuntu 2D session.
