I know this has been completely random, thus, difficult to grab any sort
of meaningful information for you, but, you may want to take a look at

Maybe I'm exepriencing something like that. Early in the session unity
crashes right to console, which is showing some litter and not reacting.
I have to switch to another VTY, login and restart lightdm. Then it
works up to day end.

I wish I knew how to reproduce it. I suspect it might have something to do
with the proprietary Nvidia drivers. Other than that I'm not really sure.
I'm a Linux noob for the most part.
