I followed the instructions, but no information appeared on the desktop.

Then try updating again. If it still wont work, try an update via apt
to confirm its not a problem with dpkg. (Instructions below)
1) sudo apt-get update
2) sudo apt-get upgrade 2>&1 | tee ~/Desktop/upgrade
*Then attach the file that will be located on your desktop
This looks like the same place it was originally hanging up.
