XvBA Hardware Acceleration doesn't work
To manage notifications
I have the same problem and my workaround (almost similar to the
description) explained at

** Description changed:
XvBA Hardware Acceleration doesn't work even after installation of
xvba-va-driver package. vainfo output:
libva: libva version 0.32.0
Xlib: extension XFree86-DRI missing on display :0.0.
libva: va_getDriverName() returns 0
libva: Trying to open
Got similar message from vainfo. Additionally couldn't install xvba-va-
driver since it requires package fglrx-driver, but in 11.04 it's
replaced by fglrx.

The intresting thing it's start working (in mplayer and libva from
ppa:gma500/emgd and latest VLC) after this command:
LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME=fglrx export LIBVA_DRIVER_NAME
