In my case this started happening when I upgraded from Ubuntu 10.04 to

In my case the screen doesn't dim but I guess this is because I don't
have Compiz enabled.

I have been using firefox on both widows and now on ubuntu and it had never
happened untill recently . It is not normal , I click on pages and they load
and then browser freezes , no clicks work except minimize and when id minimise
it hangs the screen. Also wanted to know why when I play files
