I can confirm that this still happens with Oneiric. I found a workaround: to change the keymap using xkb. I'm guessing that any changes done using xmodmap in xinitrc get overwritten by KDE later on during its startup, when it applies the default xkb map. But if my xinitrc uses setxkbmap instead,
