Also, just to clarify, my failure reports "apport: unrecognized service"
which I don't see in the other bug report. Not sure if that is helpful

Well, I ended up installing apport and trying a do-release-upgrade which
still failed, but a aptitude full-upgrade seemed to take care of
everything because lsb_release -a now reports 11.10
