Yes, the machine is kept fully up to date on a daily basis and it has
-proposed and -backports selected in the updates tab.
I'm still getting the same problem.

scratch that, I've just run some updates today and it seems to be fixed.
I'm now on 11.04 since I originally posted, so not entirely sure what
has fixed it.

OK, after playing with it a little more I've discovered that it is not
starting google chrome that does this, but playing an embedded video (on
youtube, several but not tried any other site).
Here are the outputs of both commands before and after.
Before starting the browser.
