Something rather important that I forgot to mention: I've disabled
SELinux ('selinux=0' in boot kernel line), and hangups with Sox still
happen when playing audio on the internal sound device (CK604, in my
case). Using MPlayer, there are no problems with OSS or ALSA.

I think I've fixed this, though it needs to be confirmed. This is a
hardware issue with the Creative SB Audigy 2 NX, I think. In short,
going into the BIOS and setting the onboard USB controller mode to USB
V1.1 sorted it (before, it was set to V2.0 and V1.1).
