I get the same error, still not fixed. Happens when I click the sound
applet to change volume. I don't get to even see the slider before it
crashes.

I get the following syslog error whenever I hover over the sound
indicator icon in the unity panel (the panel refreshes itself, it's not
possible to click on the sound indicator at all):

Managed to produce the same error but was nothing to do with the sound
indicator. It was the clock indicator which triggered it here.

Reproduced it exactly as I wrote.
Click on sound indicator, try to move the volume slider, get dropped out
of the menu, click on sound indicator again and the UI should freeze
afterwards until unity-panel-service restarts. Music kept playing all
the time, so only unity/compiz froze.

When going through the indicators unity-panel-service crashes sometimes
for me. Isn't solved in my opinion.
