this is especially frustrating because F2 doesn't seem to work on bootup, and I
can't get into the system at all. The boot menu never appears.
What happened to the idea of having the boot menu appear automatically in alpha
and beta versions, so we testers could always get in to recovery options?

I'm experiencing the same problem on my EeePC 901.
I installed the alternative iso on an encrypted disk.
After install I logged in ok, and had problem with unitys launchbar so I
decided to update/upgrade with aptitude.
Donne that and after reboot got a frozen login screen but the time changes
I have just discovered that my Lenovo trackpointer input device works,
but the touchpad, touchpad buttons and keyboard do not work. So I can
now get the focus to the password box, but can't enter text.
