Hello,
We are aware of the problem, but Thunar is being entirely rewritten at the
moment. This will be included in the new Thunar as soon as possible, but I
don't think we'll be able to fix feature-bugs on the previous version.

Problem still persists in Xubuntu 9.04. As I speak I'm moving a large
file from Thunar to the desktop and I have no idea when it's done :(

Still persists in Xubuntu Intrepid (8.10). Dragging a file or folder to
the desktop creates an icon immediately but no progress indication is
displayed. A progress bar is shown when manipulating items within
Thunar or when dragging from the desktop to Thunar.

I double-checked. It does show a progress dialog when copying within
Thunar but not if a file is dragged from Thunar to the desktop. If it
is dragged to the Desktop shortcut in the side pane then it does.

I can see Thunar displays the progress for copying in recent Feisty. The
lack of progress bar when unpacking is a known bug of xarchiver -- the
bar is displayed if using file roller as the archive manager.
