center programs are also called applets (capplets).

I also have that package, but I can't see an applet in the panel. Just a
program to enable/disable compiz. Is that what you are saying?
And which icon do you say? The one with the screen and the star? And the
icon itself or the icon in the corner of the desktop-effects window?
