Hmm, can you by any chance gracefully shutdown the PC. If not, remove
the power plug, put it back in and power up the PC and see what comes
up. If nothing comes up, try to boot Ubuntu from the CD or flash drive
and do the process again.

I am replacing Windows XP.
When you ask whether "Windows XP boot[s] up or [whether] the Ubuntu
installation [has] replace[d] some of the contents on the disk", are you
suggesting that I switch off my PC (presumably from the wall?), switch
it back on again and see which OS (if any) boots
When you say inplace of Windows XP, do you mean dual boot or you are
replacing Windows XP. I am thinking that there is a problem with your
disk or partition. Does Windows XP boot up or did the Ubuntu
installation replaces some of the contents on the disk?
