On my LTSP5 installation on gutsy, this emacs21 error was caused by the
local thin client image missing the xfonts-100dpi and xfonts-75dpi in
the /opt/ltsp/i386/usr/share/fonts/X11 directory. As chroot
/opt/ltsp/i386, I used apt-get install xfonts-100dpi (and xfonts-75dpi).

We run LTSP thin clients. The X11 Gui version of Emacs shows boxes
instead of fonts on our thin clients and our remote Nomachine sessions,
but fonts appear OK on the Local X Display of the LTSP server.

I don't get the crash, but the font problem is there. This is only with
emacs21. With emacs-snapshot it's OK. However, I can change the font
from the middle-click menu and then it looks OK, but the initial font
shows only boxes. This is after upgrading to Feisty.

It does the same for me on Feisty up to date. I believe it needs to be
compiled with xft backend support.
