I finally fixed my problem on WUBI and separate 11.10 install partition by adding kernel options to GRUB, ie. acpi=off noapic nomodeset Apparently my rig suffers from a regression on ACPI handling and the ATI Radeon Express 200 motherboard video, especially in the Linux Kernel 3.x strain. --

Upgrading to the Oneiric beta caused a number of crashes, this one included...for this particular problem, I went to Synaptic and re- installed everything I had already loaded under the search term at- spi...that took care of it...LibreOffice crashed because of the wrong version of Ubuntu
