I understand powerpc support has been dropped from the latest versions
(official support anyway). Would you prefer me to test this with the

Powerpc is community ported. So there are CD images available for
powerpc even for latest versions. http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/ports/

Hi,
Yep I've got a Gutsy image; my question was related more to which latest
version you'd like me to try out:
Ubuntu Dapper (latest official supported version), or
Ubuntu Gutsy (latest version overall)?
Or both even?

True enough, the initrd in Edgy is 6.1 MB while the initrd in Etch is
6.1MB, so this may be the case.
