'apt-get upgrade' from a console window works for me but update-manager still
fails.
Or better yet, is there a guide

You need a policykit agent in your custom x session. Otherwise you cannot
authenticate to aptdaemon.

This problem exist from one week ago with last update.
I downloaded a GTK update I suppose that this bug went out from this
update...
Please investigate and close as soon as possible because system is
totally unstable...
It's a blocked bug...

I guess my problem was not running Gnome3 - I was running a bare Xsession
session with openbox window manager.
I logged out, then logged in with a Gnome3 Unity session, and update-manager is
working OK for me
and downloading and applying changes. So for me the but is that update-manager
does not
How does one get this fix? I get the same error message when I run
update-manager
and if I run
sudo apt-get update
I get a list of packages downloaded but the update does not do
anything...
sudo apt-get update
.

The crash obviously only occurs when there is an authentication request and pw
not immediately or fast enough inserted.
Since #4 there no authentication request and no crash.
Just now ran update-manager, where it displayed authentication request to
install updates, insert pwd and it crasht.
