After upgrading to VirtualBox 4.1 and installing the Guest Additions, I
could still reproduce the problem in the Unity 2D session but not the
Ubuntu session. After upgrading to the latest build of Unity 2D (which
is very nice looking, btw) I could not reproduce the problem. Thanks!

Forgot to mention, when the Virtual Machine settings are set to allow
for unity (3D) and that is run instead, I cannot reproduce the problem.
Therefore I think the problem is in unity-2d, unless it's a virtualbox
problem.
