Update: I re-installed 11.04, then immediately installed all updates,
and then installed chromium. I am no longer experiencing this behavior.
Perhaps I or some other process corrupted/botched my installation
somehow, as I was having issues with other applications as well.

I was able to reproduce this issue with the open source ATI driver as
well.
I'm not sure if this is related, but one of the updates installed post
installation was an updated gtk library, which also messed up another
app I am using.Hope I'm not throwing in a red herring, but just in
case these
