Hi,
I tried Oneiric release with all updates as of today, this includes
bluez 4.96-0ubuntu4 (older than the version suggested in
comment #2). Thing still are as described by Marc on the original
report.
I'll install Precise next to see how it behaves and report back.

Hi,
So I tested on Precise with bluez 4.96-3ubuntu1 and it works, i.e. the
bluetooth icon is NOT displayed since the system has no bluetooth radio.
I'll mark this Fix Released as per policy for bugs fixed in a
development release. Feel free to reopen if there is reason to do so.
