(This paragraph is in reply to #3.) This is not the case for me. The description of my problem is very close to the title of this bug (except for no longer shows part that should be doesn't show in my case, because it never worked for me, actually). Although, my report is not very reliable:

Don't know if this is the case described in the title, but in my installation of Natty indicator shows the current keyboard layout (I have 3 keyboard layouts). If I delete all the layouts except one, keyboard layout indicator disappears. As for me, this is not a real bug, but a confusing issue.
