I managed to proceed by filtering on broken packages in synaptic and have those fixed through synaptic. After that the partial upgrade worked. However I never attempted to reinstall packages and never noticed the debsums errors that you get. I only got the failure to upgrade ubuntu- desktop. So

After the Partial Upgrade I did on the 24th of August (few minutes ago) the upgrade finished without any errors and Unity 3D is working. I got messages of programs closing unexpectedly: metacity, 2x gnome-settings- daemon and the GSettings Data Conversion. I will report these bugs in the meantime.

Whenever I try to install or reinstall packages I get debsums errors and can't perform the operation. By the way, I actually only have a functional system with unity 2D, the normal mode doesn't load unity( neither the dash or the indicators). $ sudo apt-get --reinstall install binutils ...
