At me the connector combobox DOES change when I plug in and out the
headphones. But whether headphones are in or out, sound will only work
if I manually set it to analog speakers (analog headphones in either
case produces no sound whatsoever).

I can confirm this. If I change the volume I get a very faint signal in
the headphones even with volume at max.
The phonon configuration does notice when I plug and unplug the
headphones.

Please open the sound preferences dialog and go to the output tab. Do
you notice if the connector combobox switches automatically between
speaker and headphones as you plug/unplug?
