What Flash-Aid seems to do is 1 remove flash that is in the way and 2 install up to date Adobe. In principle -- as I think you are saying -- Flash-Aid shouldn't be necessary. But for naive users such as myself -- I'm currently trying to use Ubuntu as a tool rather than as a development target -- F

I reported similar problems on bug report 933509. There does seem to be a conflict between the "GNU Gnash free GPL'd SWF player" and the Adobe Flash player; both seem to want to be the only Flash player on the PC. I had removed, then reinstalled the Adobe player, and kept getting a message saying
