machine goes into hibernation.
When powering on the machine, I get the status bar which then becomes
somewhat distorted. The reason seems to be that the machine is booting
in tty1 and expecting there to be an X session.

This should be fixed in git, there were some issues in 2.6.20 with
libata and power management. Could you please also attach an Xorg.log.0,
and try from the console (with no X running)?
echo disk | sudo tee /sys/power/state
Should do it.

Hi Fabio,
I have tried both with and without PATA/SATA.
(/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist) It's the same result, I'm still getting the black
screen with the mouse and nothing else.

After you did change the harddisk, did you try both with and without
PATA/SATA?
so the first problem was an hardware failure, right? if you get up to
gdm, the kernel isn't at fault here.

Hi,
I have added the libata-pata line into the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist and
redid the hibernation process. These are the steps:
1. Select System->Quit->Hibernate
2. Wait until machine powers off
3. Power on the machine
The behavior of the machine did not change. I was still getting the
Is the disk on SATA or PATA? If PATA, can you add the libata-pata
modules to the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist and try with the drivers/ide
modules?
Cheers, Kyle
