Tried with Herd 4 and the issue was indeed fixed with a recent update of
linux-restricted-modules.

This issue is solved in 2.6.20-8-generic at least for me (and maybe a
bit before, I didn't use the restricted-modules for some days)

I can confirm this problem.
My atheros wireless card doesn't show up as a network adapter in the
feisty herd 3 Live CD.
Ubiquity froze when trying to format the partitions. I had no idea why.

I've uninstalled linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-6-generic and built the
kernel module myself from the latest svn version and it loads perfectly
and works correctly with NetworkManager.

Same issue once the system installed with the following kernels :
2.6.20-6-i386
2.6.20-6-generic
2.6-20-5-i386
2.6.20-5-generic
I'm unable to test with 2.6.17-10-386 because the initrd can't be
generated (the initrd generator seems to need at least 2.6.19)

This also affect the rest of the installation because no more modprobe can be
done.
Then Ubiquity get stuck at the while trying to load the modules needed for the
formatting, I had to "killall -9 modprobe" to go to the next step.
