I think my problem really is SATA related and a duplicate of Bug #78288.

kernel 2.6.20-5 doesn't boot with sata-hd

Kernel 2.6.20-6 does not boot with lost interrupt error
I can boot the herd3 desktop cd with 2.6.20-6-generic without problems
though. ls /dev/ shows again hde and hde1..8. being my partitions on my
primary harddrive.
But why is it hde and not sda, like it used to be? Or at least hda? No
sign of any SATA sdx devices..
By the way, the partitioner also
Sorry, changed mainboard recently, it is an Intel 865PE chipset.
Mainboard is an ASUS P4P800 SE.
