Same problem with Intel GMA950, gnome. Happens quite often; I'll
probably disable desktop effects or switch to Beryl.

i Have the same problem, i use compiz with ATI Radeon 9600 and open driver for
ATI.
I can close the window only with right click on the bar of the open application
and than pressing "CLOSE".

Indeed, pressing Alt and clicking in the window works as a workaround.
It would be nice if someone could patch this.

I can confirm Torbjorn's workaround. If you press ALT, then click
somewhere in the window, then let go of alt, then you are able to
minimize the window.

I just tested something that I think could be of interest for this bug.
If not being able to close the maximized window with the close button on
the window. Press down ALT key and click somewhere in the window (a
plussign will be seen), then you can close it with the closebutton on
the window.

I was able to reproduce the bug under gnome and KDE. Under gnome this
happens just sometimes... under KDE I'm always forced to use minimized
windows...
My sys specs:
Ubuntu 7.04
GeForce go 5200
