@vanvugt; ahh, I don't think you are talking about the blur, you are
referring to the reflections cast by the icons that is bouncing off the
back of the Dash 'glass' material. These reflections are there to give
the glass a sense of depth and make it feel more 'material' like. This
effect is now
OK, well, design might be happy but I'm not.
Blur effects should only blur what is _behind_ the blur. In this bug, we
see the blur operating just slightly on the icons that are meant to be
in front of the blur. That's definitely a bug. Even if most people don't
notice it.

No, this is not a duplicate of that bug. They're quite different. Also,
this bug is still visible in the screenshots of after bug 978785 is
fixed.

It is certainly better in Unity 5.8, but not fixed. There is fuzzy
ghosting still.

Cimi toned this ghosting effect down, see: http://bazaar.launchpad.net

Precisely, the ghosting effect was reduced in its opacity, from 50% to
15%. I guess this bug should be closed, as the Dash does not look broken
anymore.

Oh lol, I had to put my noise in the laptop display to see them.
They are now extremely subtle, which is IMO a good thing :)
P.S. This lappy is using "Mobile Intel® GM45 Express Chipset" video card, if
that could be of assistance :P

George, your screenshot does show ghosted icons. They're just much
harder to see in recent Unity updates. Look carefully at the icons down
the left side... Disk Usage Analyzer, Full Circle Magazine, Personal
File Sharing etc. Also Power Statistics.

Hmmm, I can't see any "frosted glass" (or "icon ghosts") in my Dash and I have
Intel video.
Has the been removed (please say yes, please say yes)
P.S. I've attached a screenie :)

Daniel, it was originally a design decision to have a "frosted glass"
effect.
On closer looking, I do see the frosted glass still on about the 4th or
5th row (at the bottom of my screen) on Intel graphics, so I agree this
isn't quite fixed yet. Since I can't find this fix mentioned in the
Ubuntu c
I believe it's probably caused by the way that Unity does blurring. It
should only blur what is behind the dash, but obviously it's blurring
what is (about to be) rendered on the dash too.

I think a sobtle shadow would make the icons stand better, agreeing with
Jens at comment 6 that blending it with the background is not a good
idea.
BTW, icons in Unity-2d's Dask look way better because they do not have
this 'ghosting' effect.

Whatever is put behind icons should have better contrast, it should not
resemble too much to the icon itself.
It should make it outstand the background, not blend with it.

i've really though the blurred copy of icons as a shadow was just a
bug... :)
I think the right appearance is the one described by SABDFL in his blog:

The blurred effect for icons when no transparency looks unprofessional.
Looks broken and unfinished. PLEASE fix this.
Also, I really prefer to have dash background (static blur / other) to
have option of showing a clean/iconless version of current desktop
color/wallpaper. Looks so much easier to
I too thought this was a glitch and without the explanation from John
Lea I'd never guessed this is supposed to be a frozen glass effect that
gives the dash some depth.
Also, is the vanishing point supposed to be the center of the screen or
the center of the dash?

Oh and for what it's worth, I think this could look good but the current
