Just a quick note for the Could not import tiling module! error.
This error occurs (AFAIK) when there are some links missing.
When compiling from source, you will have to do the following in your gDesklets
source directory:
cd utils
ln -s .libs/*.so .
cd ../libdesklets/system
ln -s .libs/*.so .
I am also seeing this problem on Lucid Lynx (10.04). Starting
gdesklets gives me:
Starting gdesklets-daemon...
Connecting to daemon [### ]
=[date and time]=
Could not import tiling module!
Connecting to daemon [ ### ]
Cannt establish
This problem is NOT solved in Lucid Lynx (10.0.4). It appears exactly as
described.

rest is the same!) :)
I forgot to mention that I've tested the patch on my amd64 jaunty and it

The severity of this bug needs to be increased! Over a year and a half
and still no solution...
If this problem cannot be fixed for Intrepid than the gdesklets package
should be removed from the amd64 distribution entirely. It really makes
no sense for Ubuntu to ship an entirely useless,
My new computer is one based on the amd64 platform and gdesklets works for
me. Of course, I'm talking about the gdesklets source. Thus, it sounds like

I attempted many of the solutions I found online in addition to editing

For me it looks like, the problem is not located within the gdesklets
code, rather somewhere in the bindings. Ubuntu seems to link it agains
python 2.4.x. At least for x86-64 systems. It'd be interesting if
someone could remove the pygtk bindings, compile it, link it against
python 2.5.x and
the python 2.4 trick worked.
I am pretty surprised though as on 10 Aug 07, the status changed to fix
commited, but yet, the fix is not released :s
any idea why it take so long to get in the official repo?

I've been investigating it a little bit. It seems utils/tiling.so uses
Py_InitModule4 to load. I stumbled on some comment about renaming
Py_InitModule4 to Py_InitModule4_64 on 64-bit machines so that 2.4
modules don't get loaded in 2.5 interpreter

that helped me alot: since i changed the lines in all files you
mentioned, and installed python2.4 package, gdesklets finally loaded :)
still there are problems in usability, as they dont support true
transparency (i use compiz fusion), they show allways the desktop as
IMO we should open a new bug report, this bug has a 'fix commited'
status which obviously is wrong. There hasn't been any progress and
maybe the package maintainer isn't aware of the last reports.

fc8 alpha (64bit) works fine although I did have to move the desklets

ok I ruthlessly exterminated every trace of any previous install of
gdesklets . I checked out a new copy of 0.3x from
https://code.launchpad.net/gdesklets; . I ran ./autogen.sh , make ,
sudo make install . I did not see any errors in any step , I copied the
output of the terminal for each step
just for grins I'm going to uninstall the just built gdesklets and see
what happens if I unpack the fedora rpm and copy it into the respective
directories , worst I can do is trash my system.

to use a fresh version from bzr. There'll be a beta soon. The final

The problem should be fixed in bzr. We've been testing it on a amd64
system and the problem no longer occurrs.

I'm running the generic (386) version under Gutsy and see the same
problem, more or less. I see all the same stuff about gslice. In my case
I have 2 accounts. I don't use gdesklets but the other account does. On
my account I can run the daemon just fine since I have no gdesklets to
load. I can
the work around .deb from Bug #110103 had been working in gutsy until
todays (may 21) updates now its back to cannot start daemon.
