temporary workaround is to do :
sudo addgroup cupsys plugdev
sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart
it worked. thank you!

The problem of the USB printer not being detected is probably the one
described in bug 82187:

There you find also a workaround. Please try and tell whether it solves
your problem.

scanner functions works ok with xsane
