I can confirm the problem is solved for me in Gutsy.

Well, I've not done any work on it as such, but I do think it maybe
fixed in Gutsy. While testing the Gutsy Beta CD-ROM I found that it took
me straight into my max 1440x900 resolution and I was able to swap back
and forth from others without issue. I want to play with it once more to
confirm this.
Hi Dan, anything additional to report? I should've mentioned that one
thing I intended to do was to get somebody from X.org involved, since
this seems like it must be something upstream of Ubuntu proper.

Sigh. I have been meaning to devote more time to this.
I'd be happy to have some help ... frankly if you want to reassign it to
yourself (or if I need to do it) that would be fine. I built and ran
with the version of the radeon module that shipped in Edgy and was able
to reproduce the problem
Hi Matthew. You getting anywhere with this? Can I help out?

Assigning this bug to myself ... going to keep digging, despite not
knowing much about X internals (but I want to learn!) If somebody else
with experience with this driver wants to take over the bug and/or
assist that would be welcome.

I'm doing some digging into this issue.
The capplet isn't the problem, it merely retrieves and sets resolutions
via the RandR X extension. I can create the same corruption by using
xrandr(1) to switch to the problematic display modes.
Interestingly corruption happens only in display modes higher
I have just installed Ubuntu 7.04 and had the same problem.
My graphics card and monitor are exactly the same as Munckfish (ATI
Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility
with Acer 17" CrystalBrite LCD). Using an Acer Aspire 9500.
Thanks for the work around Munckfish.

I have encountered this same issue with my Asus M6Ne laptop, with an ATI
Mobility Radeon 9700, in Feisty Release.
The autogenerated xorg.conf did not include resolutions higher than
1024x768. Switching to any resolutions higher than 1024x768 in the
capplet resulted in the same type of corruption
