Upower update has fixed battery indicator issue, but my keyboard
backlighting no longer works and my notebook will not suspend when i
close the lid.

I think, the problem is due to the /usr/lib/upower/upowerd. It's
failling to start.

FWIW, I'm seeing the same gap in the panel on a desktop system. "upower
-d" fails like described, "sudo upower -d" shows the following:
Daemon:

on-low-battery: no
lid-is-closed: no
lid-is-present
$ upower -d

For me, the output directly from "upower -d" is the same as others are
seeing in their xsession logs:
