I've been having this problem for a while now, it doesn't seem to have
been fixed through various increments of ubuntu. I'm now on 12.10 and
I'm still getting it...

This is likely due to leaks in nm-applet or libappindicator; those were
worked around in the new version available in Oneiric.
As a workaround, you can stop nm-applet and start it again:
killall nm-applet
nm-applet &

(Ubuntu)
