Hi,
this one solved my problem:
go in the mixer
click on Select Controls and mark everything
close and put volume to max in all parameters
go to switches and disable everything
this was my solution when i had the same problem

what is the value of ac97_power_save ?
do the pcm playback switch remain mute after you mute and unmute at
sound preference ?

I have never been able to fix this problem. It's there ever since, and
it's still here also with the latest distributions/kernel/ALSA (tried
with kernels up to 3.2.5 and latest ALSA).
That is: the bug also affect *Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin, and likely
will affect 10.10 too.
