thanks for your bug report. Is that still an issue in Ubuntu 12.04? Can
you please test that and let us know?

I have not seen this specific issue on Ubuntu 12.04, so I guess it's
been resolved for me.
(I've stopped using Unity, though, as in my experience it's a serious
CPU hog, or compiz is, and seems to freeze my system frequently. I'm
unable to get any specific information on why this might be so have

I'm working on a similar issue right now. Upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04
LTS, something got interrupted, and I ended up with a broken upgraded
system.
I'm going to list *everything* I had to do to have it documented all in
one place. Please feel free to move it if appropriate, although one of
I have quite a story with this bug. Immediately after upgrading from
10.04 I had a problem with Nautilus crashing and I thought it was
related with the video drivers (it wasn't as I discovered later). So I
used the hardware drivers tool to update the video drivers, but the new
drivers were kind of
Update: I solved my buggy video drivers issue by deactivating v-sync.
So to summarize: changing the video drivers seems to fix this bug for me. I'm
currently using fglrx_updates.

I was able to open a terminal using Nautilus and then was able to run
CCSM and when I activated the Unity plugin like Yann Dìnendal recomended
this time Unity started working except for the window decorations.

I tried running unity-window-decorator and it said I needed compiz-
gnome. After installing compiz-gnome I got what looks like the standard
unity window decoration back.

I never had compiz-settings-manager installed and did a apt-get
autoremove and that did not help me.

I tried what Yann Dìnendal suggested in #4 and I did notice that Unity
was also not checked and there were keyboard shortcuts that had
problems, but resolving them never helped me. I still do not have any

Have you tried uninstalling compiz-settings-manager? I also had this
same problem, but uninstalling that, and then apt-get autoremove did a
magic 'fix' for my system

I've marked a bug I reported as a bug as a duplicate (848041). There are
a couple of differences, though. In my case, it's intermittent. Usually,
Unity starts, but sometimes, I get the Nautilus menu. In one case, it
switched to Nautilus in the middle of a session.

I had the same problem. But then, I noticed the unity plugin had been
deactivated in ccsm. If I activate it, it complains about some keyboard
shortcuts conflicts (static switcher, gnome compatibility, …). I
resolved them and I have compiz back! :)
No idea why it had been deactivated, though…

But if I try to activate « Unity grab handles » plugin, it crashes:
WARN 2011-09-13 23:57:22 glib.glib-gobject unknown:0 instance of invalid
non-instantiatable type `(null)'
Initializing unitymtgrabhandles options...done

I don't have unity-greeter installed. Which package depends on it?
It appears one of the upgrades didn't went well…

I know some of this is answred above, but I thought I would put it here

Did you upgrade from Natty?
No, I did a fresh install of Alpha 3 and updated since then.
When was the last time unity was working for you?
It worked fine the first few days and now, always, I just get the
