As explained by Till hp-setup asks CUPS for PPDs which are generated from
foomatic-db-hpijs, I have verified this with my HP DeskJet 3820 printer. This

told to install that package, so I did, and that made there be a PPD for

The most current version of HPLIP (1.7.3, in Feisty) does not need
hpijs-ppds at all. The HP guys have fixed hp-setup so that it asks CUPS
for PPDs instead of looking for physical files. CUPS calls the PPD
generator of Foomatic which returns the HP PPDs (as you have probably
already seen in the gno
I think hp-setup should be installed by default because without it hp
scanner printer comibination doesn't work out of the box and network
installation of hp printers would be more complicated. This could be
solved through the wiki but why make it more complicated if only a small
additional packet

(this package is pulled in by linuxprinting-ppds), foomatic-db-hpijs
also has source database... I don't see a point of including hpijs-ppds

I can confirm this. Without this package hp printer like Photosmart are
recognized as Laserjet in the HPLIP Toolbox. After installing it
installatioin of the printer is much more easier than under Windows.
