If you're running PulseAudio, use it for recording and e g the
pavucontrol application to route the right input (Mic) to your
application.

Sorry, but this is somewhat confusing. The USB headset was not present
in comments #14 to #23, yet you claim there is a '[Headset plughw:1.0]'
setting. Can we focus on one machine here, and one mic?
