Public bug reported:

When I start skype, the skype icon appears briefly in the notification
area and disappears. Once that happens there is no way to see the
running instance of skype. The workaround that worked for me is to start
another instance and do a pkill on skype and then start again. But even
after that some times the icon disappears and if I ever close the skype
windows, I will lose access to the running instance.
