I had the same problem with a Satellite L755 (Intel only, no NVIDIA) and
solved it by creating this file:
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf
Giving it the following:
Section "Device"
Identifier "card0"
Driver "intel"
Option "Backlight" "intel_backlight"
FYI that above fix was for Ubuntu 14.04 / Linux Mint 17, with the 3.19
kernel

Title:
Brightness control on Toshiba Satellite L755
To manage
I have only the folder: /sys/class/backlight/toshiba ,
Change the value of brightness as root and still does not change the
brightness, the brightness in windows works well, I hate windows. my eyes do
not stand up to the maximum brightness. of ubuntu. : (

Felipe: I'm still waiting for a definite confirmation that the nouveau's
backlight driver doesn't work. If you could ensure that you're using
nouveau, then test changing the brightness via the
/sys/class/backlight/nv_backlight/brightness file, that would be a big
help.

I'm already using nouveau driveri've tried dkms package...and bios is up to
date...nothing to do...
I have the dual boot...and using windows backlight controll work at all...
About nvidia control pannel i'm just using that for backlight controll...but
it's not such a good solution.
I suppose
Both times you've attached your logs it shows your using the proprietary
nvidia driver, not nouveau. I'm not sure, but I suspect that you can
only use the control panel with the proprietary driver as well.

Can you check one more thing? After you write a value to the brightness
file, do you get that value when you read the actual_brightness file, or
something else?

Yes.Values changesbut not brightness...
root@ale-SATELLITE-L755:/home/ale# echo 1 | tee
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
1
root@ale-SATELLITE-L755:/home/ale# cat
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/max_brightness
7
root@ale-SATELLITE-L755:/home/ale# cat
That indicates that the interaction with the bios is okay --
actual_brightness actually fetches the brightness level from the bios,
so we can see that the values you write are getting through. But
whatever the bios is doing doesn't actually affect the brightness for
whatever reason. I'll look at
toshiba_acpi probably isn't going to help. Most newer models I've looked
at don't support modifying the brightness level via the interface it
uses, only reading it, and yours doesn't appear to be an exception.
Please try the following. First, run these commands:
cat

Brightness control on Toshiba Satellite L755
To manage
There's a known issue with toshiba_acpi loading on newer models, but
that module shouldn't be necessary to control your backlight (and on
some models the interface used by toshiba_acpi doesn't allow adjusting
the backlight anyway). Backlight control should still be possible via
the generic ACPI
