What more information is needed?
I'm having same problem with empathy 3.2.0.1-0ubuntu1.1 running on Ubuntu 11.10
64-bit.
Having facebook in the background does not work for me, I just don't get
the messages to me in empathy, but I can write to users.

Yup, I can definitely confirm this as well. It's rendered empathy
useless in this regard.. I do notice that the messages will come through
if chrome or firefox has facebook open but as soon as I close the tab
the messages stop
