I have the same problem. The difference from OP is that the host is
Windows 7 and the guest is Ubuntu oneiric (x86_64) . The guest was
originally ubuntu natty and upgraded to oneiric.

It's beyond sluggish for me, I find both the host and guests unusable
until I can get through the IO wait long enough to kill virtualbox.
