There's a simple fix, which avoids running any dpkg-* commands:
sudo su
echo /usr/sbin/lightdm /etc/X11/default-display-manager
exit
That should do it.

The file /etc/X11/default-display-manager only contained lightdm, I don't
know why. With the full path, it works!
