Hey Jane, Pete, I think this one is fixed (even in oneiric finale) as we
prevent unity to start in those situation and either fallback to 2d
either don't let the option for turning on the external monitor. Can you
confirm it?

I had this bug too (see duplicate bug 887425) with KMS-based open source
graphics drivers. It was a kernel issue which I found was fixed in
kernels 3.1 and later. So fix released in precise.
